In suspecting toxicological cause for a patient's illness, EMS providers often inspect the patient's home for empty pill bottles or chemical containers to find the possible substance that might have been ingested. In cases where such evidence is unavailable, careful history taking and assessment of the signs and symptoms presented by the patient would be key to identification of the substance.
